Day 6: 6/30/12

30 Jun

Down to 202 pounds today (happy).

After hitting the gym this morning, I made my juices for the day … lots of kale, collards, spinach, celery, a big ol’ beet for the first time, cucumber, apple, lemon, and ginger (always ginger!).

The weather here in NC is nasty hot today … I’m glad we worked out early in the day … now we can relax and enjoy the day with a good e-book, maybe some Wimbledon (go Roddick!), and chilled juices over ice.

Since I added beets to my juice for the first time today, I thought it would be nice to share some cool beet facts:

Just Beet It!

Beets are awesome. No question about it. Not only do they add a gorgeous splash of color to any meal or juice, they add a whole lot of nutrients to our bodies! Loaded with folic acid, manganese, potassium, and iron, it’s no wonder that beets can help treat anemia, inflammation, circulation, and kidney stones.

Beets are also loaded with fiber, which means they are fantastic for aiding in and eliminating constipation and help out the large intestine.

Since Mother Nature knows what she’s doing, beets and carrots together are said to help balance hormones.

With all of that, how could beets do even more for our health? Well, a study conducted by scientists at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, suggests Dementia could be preventable with a daily drink of beet juice!

And lets not forget, beets, as well as spinach, celery and other leafy greens, are packed with nitrates which help increase blood flow, particularly in areas of the body that need more oxygen.

Beet Bonus: Beet greens taste similar to chard and contain even more nutrients than the beet’s root, with lots of calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C.

I told you beets were awesome!

Day 5: 6/29/12

29 Jun

I can’t believe I’m on my fifth day already. I was a little anxious when I started … dreading the side affects and getting through the first few days. But heck … it has been an absolute pleasure. I feel great, have lots of energy (even for daily workouts at the gym), am sleeping great, and I am starting to notice my weight loss!

This morning’s weigh-in was 203.5. Here’s a little graph that shows my weight since June 17 (from an app on my  phone called TargetWeight by tactio). The 17th was nine days before I started juicing. During that period, I prepared my system for what was about to come … by eating better (salads, less meat, more water, etc.) I followed the advice provided by the folks at Join the Reboot. I’m thinking that’s why I have had such a great experience so far. I’ve actually lost about ten pounds since that date!

Nothing better than a nice refreshing Green Juice over ice when it’s 104 degrees outside. A wonderful dinner made in seven minutes without turning on the stove/oven 🙂

Ahh … treating myself to an apple + clementine + grapes juice.

It’s like a glass of “perky!”

Day 4: 6/28/12

28 Jun

Good morning!

yum yum yum and a hip-hip-hurray for today’s breakfast juice:

  • 2 carrots
  • 2 apples
  • 2 oranges

And today’s lunch will be:

  • kale
  • spinach
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 4 stalks celery
  • 2 apples
  • ginger root

This morning, I weighed 204.5 … that’s 5-1/2 pounds so far!

Tonight’s dinner was:

  • collards
  • celery
  • spinach
  • cucumber
  • lemon
  • ginger
  • carrots

Day 3: 6/27/12

27 Jun

Wow … my current weight is 206. I already lost four pounds (sweet!)!

And I feel great. Lots of energy, sleeping great, motivated to work out every day (we recently switched to PlanetFitness … O2 was wonderful, but really expen$ive).

Today’s breakfast was a treat … a juice of apples, oranges, and some celery.

What’s the most common question I hear when people find out I am on a juice fast?

“But, Randy … What About Protein?”

>>Read my answer<<

Dinner’s Ready … come and get it!

I got creative … hee hee (the fruits were a small percentage of the whole … a whole lotta green!)

  • celery
  • carrots
  • kale
  • cucumber
  • spinach
  • apple
  • clementine
  • lemon
  • ginger
  • grapes

We’ll be hitting the gym earlier than normal tonight … gotta be at work extra early tomorrow.

Day 2: 6/26/12

26 Jun

Eric and I were up bright and early today … using every inch of counter space to prepare our yummy breakfast meals. Eric makes a protein shake to get his day started (looked yummy!).

I had my carrot, apple, and ginger juice … so good!

Lunch will be the same “mean green” juice that I enjoyed last night for dinner.

= = =

Lunch was good. The juice I made the evening before was still very good (took it to work, drank it in between classes I taught).

For dinner … I had (it was good … almost tasted like a bloody mary):

  • celery
  • cucumber
  • kale
  • tomatoes
  • ginger
  • lemon

And … as a little snack (while I was making the next day’s breakfast and lunch), I had a mini juice of apple + orange + grapes.

Tomorrow’s breakfast will be oranges + apples + grapes

…and lunch will be a nice helping of celery + cucumber + kale + tomatoes + ginger + lemon

I feel great and have had no adverse effects at all. No headache, no sprints to the restroom … the first two days have been a pleasure.

I feel like I’ve already lost a pound or two … I’ll probably weigh myself in the morning to see what Mister Scale has to say.

Day 1: 6/25/12

25 Jun

Several weeks ago, I had my annual physical examination. And … I heard the same things I always hear. “You are in overall excellent health … but you may want to start eating better and exercising more since you have a family history of weight management, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type-2 diabetes.”

I have been working-out on and off forever, and I’ve had periods of healthy eating here and there. But, I have not been able to make the commitment to a completely healthy lifestyle … until now.

Since my medical exam, I have watched a few documentaries that have motivated me to take this plunge. I highly recommend them:

They all have their own message … but a common thread is that vegetables rock! Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead made the strongest impact on me … and I am following its lead on  my fast.

For the next 30 days, I will not chew! I will only consume vegetable and fruit juices. This will cleans, detox, and repair my body’s cells with micronutrients … rebuilding my body from the inside out.

I bought my juicer (the Jack LeLanne Power Juicer) and made my first trip to the grocery (which will be an every-three-days activity).

And … drum roll please … I’ve enjoyed my first juice. It was SO good … better than anything I’ve ever had from the grocery. I am planning to have this for breakfast most days.

  • 3 Carrots
  • 2 Apples
  • 1 small piece of Ginger (about 1″)

OK … wish me luck y’all. According to a few articles I’ve read and what my doctor told me, I could expect some headaches and some tummy grumbling during the first few days of this. This is a great article on what is actually going to happen inside me while I’m dong this.

And .. according to my bathroom scale, I weigh an alarming 210 pounds right now. UGH!

I made this for dinner (will be lunch on Tuesday, too).

Mean Green Juice

  • 1 Cucumber
  • 4 Celery Stalks
  • 2 Apples
  • 6-8 leaves Kale
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 1tbsp. Ginger

My juicer had a tough time with the Kale … maybe I’ll try spinach on my next batch.

After dinner, we’re heading to the gym to get some cardio in, too … I want to try the new Arc Trainer gizmo. Have a great night!
